about

Fantasy: "a musical composition, free in form, typically involving variation on an existing work or the imaginative representation of a situation or story; a fantasia." [New Oxford American Dictionary]

This album is something I've been working on for some time. I am a huge fan of so many different artists and composers. "Fantasies For Piano" is a collective tribute to some of my favorite artists. Many composers of the past would write pieces based on melodies by other composers, as a fantasy, a different arrangement, or a theme and variations. It is a tradition I wanted to continue (but with a modern twist), so I came up with the idea for this album.

I think of these works as a sort of ultimate "fan letter" to these artists I so greatly admire. At the beginning of each piece, I play the original melody, relatively unaffected or changed. I then take that melody, motif, main idea, or texture and warp it in different styles, accompaniments, and harmonies. I sometimes veer completely away from the main idea and drift into some constructs completely of my own, but then I bring back the idea at the end to sort of "sum up" what I am trying to say, musically.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed composing and playing them. Thanks for listening!
