I have always loved St. Vincent. Her ability to challenge the listener with every new album is something I adore. She explores new sonic ideas with every album, almost creating different characters or personas for each one. "Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood" has always been one of my favorite songs. The modal chord progression, clustered strings, and her sweet and dark lyrics ignite such fantastic imagery. That is probably the thing I love most about St. Vincent. I love how the music and lyrics have a duality of mood and character. There is a sweetness underlaid by darkness and gloom. No matter how many times I listen to a song (or entire album) by her, I find something new each time. I was the most nervous about this fantasy, because I wanted to treat this song well. My main focus was on the chord progression. I intertwine some of my new ideas over that progression building to a calmer middle section that I wanted to have echo her jazz influences. I finish the piece with the progression intensifying in a new key, with a flourish to the climax.
