Fantasy on a Melody by Sufjan Stevens - "Chicago"

from Fantasies For Piano by Michael R. Oldham

/

about

I was introduced to Sufjan's music from my good friend Melissa (and the movie Little Miss Sunshine). The first album I bought was "The Avalanche" and I was hooked. It was weird and strange and unlike any music I'd heard before. I kept listening to the album on repeat and soon bought the rest of his discography. I grew up in a small town in Illinois, so I had to drive 35-40 minutes to a record store or Barnes n' Noble to buy the albums, so it also felt exotic. He was singing about my home state and cities I had visited or lived near all of my life. He was doing things compositionally that echoed the past, present, and future. I was completely enthralled and continue to be to this day by Sufjan's music. "Chicago" is, of course, a brilliant song and will always resonate with me. I use the main motif from the song as the focus of my fantasy. Using this idea, I re-harmonize it with rapid arpeggios and minimalistic repetitions that lead to an exciting finish.
