A Young Couple Watches Fireworks

Fourth of July 2021.

I was working most of the day, so I missed the chance to enjoy any festivities. I was home alone and feeling a bit down.

All of a sudden, across the street past the railroad tracks and just above the treeline, fireworks began to explode into the night sky. I paused and watched them from my second floor apartment.

It was such a beautiful moment that I immediately sat down at my piano. My piano sits at the front right corner of my apartment tucked into a turret with a large bay window, so I could play and watch the show.

I glance down at the street and see my neighbors standing and watching the show too. Together. A young couple. Hipsters that chain smoke and play headset video games all night. I think they were both wearing flannels that hung halfway off of their bodies.

I felt like I caught a real genuine moment. They stood in the street watching the fireworks together. I witnessed two people in love the way they were when no one else was around. A true connection. A sweet memory being made. Maybe it'll be something they both think back on occasionally and it will remind them why they decided on each other in the first place.

I've been in a solitary period of my life. It has been illuminating, but it's these little moments that I miss most about being with another person. I think that hit me pretty deeply after watching a young couple in love sharing such a tender moment.

I wrote this piece for them and to the man who will one day be standing alongside me watching fireworks.
