To Those I've Loved in Your Wake

from Absent-Minded Romance by Michael R. Oldham

/

about

This was originally written as an art song from the perspective of someone telling their first love about the struggles and trepidation of connecting with someone new after they ended things.

Here are the original lyrics:

To those I've loved in your wake...
I'm sorry that I've been cautious,
Cautious to bloom,
Cautious to care,
Cautious to open up to something new...

To you, who's made love anew...
I've been a wreck, so don't expect me to be...
Willing to jump in,
And say, "I love you..."
But given time you will see,
Just how loving I can be.
